The sign of well-being in the Yup'ik hamlet is the presence of “mantak” - a piece of raw whale fat with a layer of skin. Those who can support well-being gain prestige. Apart from an experienced hunter, it can be a wise woman. Ethnography is the science of establishing and interconnecting the details, while photography aims to preserve “the decisive moment” (Cartier-Bresson 1952). It is in this pursuit of the fragment of reality where ethnography and photography intersect.
