Liquid colours

Poly-(para phenylene vinylene) (PPV) is a conducting and light emitting polymer which easily forms a liquid crystalline phase when prepared from solution. In the polarized optical microscope this liquid like structure creates a play of colours shifted towards the red emission of the polymer. The fascination of this image is its fractal-like composition and colour survey originating from the simple macromolecular arrangement in the liquid crystalline phase.
