In January 2012 I had the great opportunity to join a research expedition to the ice-covered waters north of Svalbard, Arctic Ocean. This experience onboard the R/V Helmer Hanssen showed me the challenges we face as scientists when we try to collect samples during the time of the Arctic Polar Night - a time of constant darkness with the sun continually located more than 12° below the horizon. And at 81° N I felt the fascination of being one of the most northerly persons on our planet.
