Man washing his hands near Magadi, Karnataka

by Philip Mader

Water is plentiful yet 1.2 billion people lack access to it. While studying water rights and projects for drinking water and sanitation in south Indian slums, I passed this traditional communal reservoir in which a local man was washing his hands. The picture reminds me that while there is enough H2O for everyone, qualitatively it must be safe to use, and above all poor people need the entitlement to access it and use it like this man did.
